The Valley Light Opera produced Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance at Amherst Regional High School on October 30, 31, November 1, 6, 7, and 8, 2009. Graham Christian stage directed and choreographed; Joseph Sabol was the music director. Click here to see the text of the program.

"I bound him to a pirate . . . instead of to a pilot."
Ruth (Courtney Sylvain) explains how Frederic became a pirate.
". . . you are too tender-hearted . . . never molesting an orphan."
Frederic (Michael Holt) tells Samuel (John Healy) and the Pirate King (Michael Gondek) why they don't seem to make piracy pay.

"How pitiful his tale! How rare his beauty!"
The daughters consider Frederic's explanation of his attire.
"Poor wandering one!"
Frederic (Michael Holt) hangs on Mabel's (Elaine Crane) every word.

"We'd better pause, or danger may befall.
Their father is a Major-General."
Samuel (John Healy) and The Pirate King (Michael Gondek) consider the situation.
The ten daughters including Mabel (Elaine Crane).

"Yes, orphan. Have you ever known what it is to be one?" --
"I say, often"
Pirate King (Michael Gondek) and Major-General Stanley (Matthew Roehrig) try to understand one another.
"See at our feet they kneel; Our hearts we cannot steel . . ."
Major-General Stanley's daughters plead with the Pirates.

"Dear father, why leave your bed, when happy daylight is dead? "
Mabel (Elaine Crane), daughters and staff attempt to console Major-General Stanley (Matthew Roehrig).
"When the foeman bares his steel."
The police assemble under the direction of their Sergeant (Steve Morgan).

"And so I will be merciful . . . Say on!"
The Pirate King (Michael Gondek) and Ruth (Courtney Sylvain) convince Frederick (Michael Holt) that he should listen to an intriguing paradox.
"A policeman's lot is not a happy one."
The policemen, led by the Sergeant (Steve Morgan), bemoan the fact that they must deprive others of their freedom.

"Forward, my men, and seize that General there! His life is over."
The pirates, led by the Pirate King (Michael Gondek) and Samuel (John Healy), sieze the Major-General (Matthew Roehrig).
"We triumph now, for well we trow, . . ."
The pirates defeat the police after a 'monumental' struggle.

"Yes, yes, with all their faults, they love their Queen."
Queen Victoria (Elaine Fligman) arrives to place the pirates under arrest.
"Fair days will shine, Take heart, . . . Take ours!"
As usual, all is well that ends well.
